Etymology
From the Greek diaphanēs, transparent — used as a color modifier since the seventeenth century for hues with the optical translucency of fine fabric. The genus Perovskia — Russian sage, the Central Asian woody perennial whose silver-leaved deep blue-violet flower spikes brave drought and cold.
