Saturated Enji
Saturated Enji (#891A12) is a deep red with a jewel character. It carries the deep, saturated richness of a gemstone. Authoritative and slightly formal, it works well for type and heavy UI elements. Its HSL profile (4°, 77%, 30%) places it in the highly saturated band at a dark lightness. Best used in small doses, like logos, CTAs, focus rings, or highlight text, where its saturation becomes a feature rather than noise. For a confident two-color system, pair it with its complementary cyan. For something softer, pull in its analogous neighbors on either side of the wheel.

From the Latin saturatus, past participle of saturare, to fill. A technical color term in modern usage — saturation is one of the three axes of HSL (with hue and lightness). A dark crimson lake pigment in Japanese textile and lacquer tradition — derived from coccus scale insects and used in the deep underrobes of Heian court dress. The color refers to a enji-dyed silk: a deep, slightly cool dark red with the velvet matte finish of multi-bath dyeing. Deeper than akane, cooler than karakurenai. The hue Murasaki Shikibu would have worn beneath an outer robe.
