The progressive participle of beam, to emit a directional light — used as a color word since the nineteenth century for hues that read as if focused and projecting. The Sanskrit word for emerald — used in Vedic and Mughal jewelry vocabulary for the saturated deep green of fine emeralds. Marakat gave the Greek smaragdus and ultimately English emerald. The color refers to a faceted Mughal-period Colombian emerald: a saturated, slightly cool deep green with the gem's signature internal life.
