Earnest Hóngzǐ
Earnest Hóngzǐ (#880B65) is a deep magenta with a jewel character. It carries the deep, saturated richness of a gemstone. Authoritative and slightly formal, it works well for type and heavy UI elements. Its HSL profile (317°, 85%, 29%) places it in the highly saturated band at a dark lightness. Best used in small doses, like logos, CTAs, focus rings, or highlight text, where its saturation becomes a feature rather than noise. For a confident two-color system, pair it with its complementary green. For something softer, pull in its analogous neighbors on either side of the wheel.
Etymology
Old English eornost, seriousness, zeal. Used as a color modifier since the nineteenth century for hues that read as committed but unshowy — the working blues of denim, the deep greens of Quaker meetinghouses. Sits in the bold-and-quiet corner of the grid, slightly less luminous than resolute and slightly less institutional than imperial.
Chinese 红紫, red-purple — the traditional Chinese color name for the warm magenta-purple band of Tang-and-Song-dynasty imperial silks. Hóngzǐ color refers to a Tang-dynasty imperial silk court robe: a saturated, slightly cool deep magenta with the silk luster of multi-bath yān-zhi (safflower) and gromwell-root overdye on tussah silk. Warmer than zǐ (purple) and cooler than hóng (red).
