Old English teru, tar — adjectival suffix -y. Lawsonia inermis, the small flowering shrub of North Africa and South Asia whose dried leaves yield a red-brown dye used since the Bronze Age for skin, hair, and textile. The color refers to fresh henna paste applied to skin, where it oxidizes to a deep brick-red over forty-eight hours.
