Easy Zen Mint

Old French aisié, comfortable, at rest — used as a color modifier since the eighteenth century for hues that read as visually undemanding. Easy beige, easy gray: moderate saturation combined with optical restfulness. Sits at the crisp-bucket center alongside calm and settled.

Japanese 禅, Zen Buddhism. As a color modifier, zen implies a stripped-down-and-meditative-Mahayana quality, the visual register of Japanese-Sōtō-and-Rinzai-Zen Zen-Buddhist hand-laid rock-garden-and-tatami-and-shōji-screen meditation-hall surfaces under Sōtō-and-Rinzai-Zen Kyoto-temple-garden meditative quiet light. The genus Mentha — peppermint, spearmint, apple mint, water mint — the cooling herb whose menthol gives it that quality at the molecular level.
