Tarry Roselle
Tarry Roselle (#870B1C) is a deep red with a jewel character. It carries the deep, saturated richness of a gemstone. Authoritative and slightly formal, it works well for type and heavy UI elements. Its HSL profile (352°, 85%, 29%) places it in the highly saturated band at a dark lightness. Best used in small doses, like logos, CTAs, focus rings, or highlight text, where its saturation becomes a feature rather than noise. For a confident two-color system, pair it with its complementary teal. For something softer, pull in its analogous neighbors on either side of the wheel.
Etymology
Old English teru, tar — adjectival suffix -y. As a color modifier, tarry implies the deep-glossy-black quality of bitumen-and-petroleum-tar viscous-residue surfaces, particularly the La-Brea-and-Trinidad-Pitch-Lake natural-asphalt seeps. Sits at the deep-and-warm end of the grid, parallel to pitchy and bituminous in usage.
Hibiscus sabdariffa, the tropical hibiscus whose dried calyxes brew the deep red sorrel tea sold across West Africa as bissap, in Egypt as karkadeh, and in the Caribbean as sorrel. The color refers to fresh roselle calyxes in hot water: a saturated, slightly cool deep red-pink with the optical complexity of anthocyanin-rich plant material. Cooler than coral.
