Occluded Henna
Occluded Henna (#840A20) is a deep red with a jewel character. It carries the deep, saturated richness of a gemstone. Authoritative and slightly formal, it works well for type and heavy UI elements. Its HSL profile (349°, 86%, 28%) places it in the highly saturated band at a dark lightness. Best used in small doses, like logos, CTAs, focus rings, or highlight text, where its saturation becomes a feature rather than noise. Latin occludere, to close up — past-participle of occlude. As a color modifier, occluded implies a hue blocked-and-dimmed by an intervening physical barrier. Sits at the deep-and-obscured end of the grid, parallel to eclipsed and cloaked but more clinical in register.
Lawsonia inermis, the small flowering shrub of North Africa and South Asia whose dried leaves yield a red-brown dye used since the Bronze Age for skin, hair, and textile. The color refers to fresh henna paste applied to skin, where it oxidizes to a deep brick-red over forty-eight hours. Earthier than rose, more orange than maroon, with the slow-developed quality particular to plant-based dye.
