From the Greek elektron, amber — the substance whose static-electric properties were observed by Thales of Miletus. The Persian word for turquoise — sourced from the Nishapur mines of Iran, used in Persian, Mughal, and Ottoman tile and jewelry for over four thousand years. Firuzeh tile defines the domes of the Shah Mosque in Isfahan. The color refers to fine Persian firuzeh: a saturated, slightly cool deep blue-green with the matte finish of fired faience.
