Engraved Cataract
Engraved Cataract (#7FFFFE) is a soft cyan with a cool character. It leans cool, sitting on the blue, green, and violet side of the wheel. Quiet and dependable, a fit for product UI and data visualization. Its HSL profile (180°, 100%, 75%) places it in the highly saturated band at a light lightness. Best used in small doses, like logos, CTAs, focus rings, or highlight text, where its saturation becomes a feature rather than noise. For a confident two-color system, pair it with its complementary red. For something softer, pull in its analogous neighbors on either side of the wheel.
Etymology
Old French engraver, to dig in — past-participle of engrave. As a color modifier, engraved implies a clear-and-precisely-cut quality, the crisp color of Albrecht-Dürer-and-Hogarth hand-pulled engraving-print fine-line incised-image. Sits at the crisp-and-incised end of the grid, parallel to etched and inscribed in usage.
A large waterfall with significant volume — particularly the Cataracts of the Nile and the Iguaçu Cataract of South America. Cataract color refers to the deep blue-white of high-volume falling water at Iguaçu: a saturated, slightly cool deep blue-white with the optical brightness of micron-scale air-water mixing.
