Shaded Annatto
Shaded Annatto (#7E0620) is a deep red with a jewel character. It carries the deep, saturated richness of a gemstone. Authoritative and slightly formal, it works well for type and heavy UI elements. Its HSL profile (347°, 91%, 26%) places it in the highly saturated band at a dark lightness. Best used in small doses, like logos, CTAs, focus rings, or highlight text, where its saturation becomes a feature rather than noise. For a confident two-color system, pair it with its complementary teal. For something softer, pull in its analogous neighbors on either side of the wheel.
Etymology
Old English sceadwian, to cover with shadow — past-participle of shade. As a color modifier, shaded implies a hue darkened by overhead-foliage-or-architectural-element occlusion in pre-modern garden-and-courtyard tradition. Sits at the deep-and-obscured end of the grid, parallel to shadowy but more architectural in connotation.
Bixa orellana, the tropical shrub whose seeds yield a red-orange dye used as food coloring (in cheese, butter, and margarine) and as body paint by the Caribbean and Central American indigenous peoples. The color refers to fresh annatto paste: a saturated, slightly orange red with the matte finish of plant-derived pigment. Warmer than vermillion, drier than tomato.
