Old English hlūd, making noise — borrowed metaphorically as a color word since the nineteenth century. A sodium-iron amphibole — the source of crocidolite (blue asbestos) and the chatoyant inclusions in hawk's-eye quartz. Mined principally in South Africa and Australia.
