Erebine Annatto
Erebine Annatto (#7C0F0D) is a deep red with a jewel character. It carries the deep, saturated richness of a gemstone. Authoritative and slightly formal, it works well for type and heavy UI elements. Its HSL profile (1°, 81%, 27%) places it in the highly saturated band at a dark lightness. Best used in small doses, like logos, CTAs, focus rings, or highlight text, where its saturation becomes a feature rather than noise. Etymology
Greek Erebine, of Erebus — adjectival form of Erebus, the primordial deity of darkness in Hesiod's Theogony. As a color modifier, erebine implies the deepest primordial-darkness of pre-cosmic chaos, with literary-cosmological register. Sits at the deepest-and-coolest end of the grid, parallel to Stygian and Cimmerian.
Bixa orellana, the tropical shrub whose seeds yield a red-orange dye used as food coloring (in cheese, butter, and margarine) and as body paint by the Caribbean and Central American indigenous peoples. The color refers to fresh annatto paste: a saturated, slightly orange red with the matte finish of plant-derived pigment. Warmer than vermillion, drier than tomato.
