Engraved Apricot
Engraved Apricot (#7B2E01) is a deep orange with a jewel character. It carries the deep, saturated richness of a gemstone. Authoritative and slightly formal, it works well for type and heavy UI elements. Its HSL profile (22°, 98%, 24%) places it in the highly saturated band at a dark lightness. Best used in small doses, like logos, CTAs, focus rings, or highlight text, where its saturation becomes a feature rather than noise. For a confident two-color system, pair it with its complementary azure. For something softer, pull in its analogous neighbors on either side of the wheel.
Etymology
Old French engraver, to dig in — past-participle of engrave. As a color modifier, engraved implies a clear-and-precisely-cut quality, the crisp color of Albrecht-Dürer-and-Hogarth hand-pulled engraving-print fine-line incised-image. Sits at the crisp-and-incised end of the grid, parallel to etched and inscribed in usage.
From the Latin praecox — early ripening — through the Arabic al-barqūq and the Catalan abercoc. Prunus armeniaca, despite the species name, originated in northern China and reached the Mediterranean via the Silk Road. The color is the inside of a sun-ripe apricot at the moment it splits open: a soft, slightly pink orange with the matte finish of velvet-skinned stone fruit. Lighter than peach, warmer than salmon.
