Holographic Slate
Holographic Slate (#788EF3) is a soft blue with a cool character. It leans cool, sitting on the blue, green, and violet side of the wheel. Quiet and dependable, a fit for product UI and data visualization. Its HSL profile (229°, 84%, 71%) places it in the highly saturated band at a light lightness. Best used in small doses, like logos, CTAs, focus rings, or highlight text, where its saturation becomes a feature rather than noise. For a confident two-color system, pair it with its complementary amber. For something softer, pull in its analogous neighbors on either side of the wheel.
Etymology
Greek hólos (whole) and graphé (writing) — adjectival suffix -ic. As a color modifier, holographic implies a saturated-and-multi-angle-shifting quality, the bright color of holographic-credit-card and trading-card dichroic-film 3D-image-reflection. Sits at the bright-and-shifting end of the grid, parallel to iridescent and prismatic in usage.
A fine-grained metamorphic rock formed from compressed shale — fissile, durable, and the standard roofing material for Welsh and Vermont houses since the nineteenth century. The color refers to a freshly split piece of Welsh slate: a soft, slightly muted gray-blue with the matte finish of a layered mineral cleavage. Cooler than steel, lighter than navy, with the architectural weight of a roof material that lasts a hundred years.
