Engraved Aniline (#7874AC) is a true blue with a cool character. It leans cool, sitting on the blue, green, and violet side of the wheel. Quiet and dependable, a fit for product UI and data visualization. Its HSL profile (244°, 25%, 56%) places it in the muted band at a mid lightness. Old French engraver, to dig in — past-participle of engrave. As a color modifier, engraved implies a clear-and-precisely-cut quality, the crisp color of Albrecht-Dürer-and-Hogarth hand-pulled engraving-print fine-line incised-image. Synthetic-organic dye class first synthesized in 1856 by William Henry Perkin from coal-tar derivatives — named after the Portuguese anil (indigo) since Perkin's first mauveine was a synthetic stand-in for natural indigo's overdyed violets. Aniline color refers to a freshly aniline-mauveine-dyed Victorian silk: a saturated, slightly cool deep blue-violet with the silky luster of the first-ever industrial synthetic dye on Lyon silk.
