Wholesome Hyacinthine

#776a93
Notes

Wholesome Hyacinthine (#776A93) is a true indigo with an earthy character. It leans grounded and natural, the kind of color that plays well with wood, clay, linen, and warm neutrals. Its HSL profile (259°, 16%, 50%) places it in the muted band at a mid lightness. It works across type, buttons, and borders, saturated enough to feel deliberate but balanced enough to not fight the rest of the palette. For a confident two-color system, pair it with its complementary lime. For something softer, pull in its analogous neighbors on either side of the wheel.

Etymology

Wholesome
adjective

An adjectival form of whole — used as a color modifier since the sixteenth century for hues that read as healthy and unadulterated. Wholesome cream, wholesome wheat: moderate saturation combined with the optical impression of a natural origin. Sits at the crisp-bucket alongside genuine.

Hyacinthine
noun

Purple dye of late-classical antiquity, mentioned in Pliny the Elder's Natural History (77 CE) as a substitute for the more expensive Tyrian purple, derived from a combination of woad and madder. Hyacinthine color refers to a hyacinthine-dyed Roman toga praetexta border: a saturated, slightly cool deep violet with the matte finish of multi-bath woad-and-madder overdye on woolen toga cloth. Slightly cooler than Tyrian.
