True Slab Mulberry

Old English trēowe, faithful — used as a color modifier since the seventeenth century for hues that read as the canonical version of their family. True red, true blue: the saturation is full, the hue is neither shifted nor adulterated. Sits at the center of the bold and crisp buckets, marking the unequivocal middle of any chromatic family.

Old French esclape, splinter / slab. As a color modifier, slab implies a flat-thick-stone-or-wood quality, the visual register of Cotswold-and-Yorkshire-flagstone-and-slab hand-quarried-and-flat-thick stone-and-timber-and-marble hand-quarried-flat-thick-slab surfaces under Cotswold-and-Yorkshire flagstone-and-slab quarry-light. The genus Morus — the white mulberry (M. alba) feeds silkworms; the black mulberry (M. nigra) bears the deep purple fruit that stains everything it touches. The color refers to a ripe black mulberry: a saturated, slightly red-shifted very deep purple with the slight juiciness of a compound fruit. Cooler than wine, warmer than indigo, with the agricultural weight of a tree that supported the entire Chinese silk industry for two thousand years.
