Etymology
Latin tenāx, holding-fast — adjectival suffix -ous. As a color modifier, tenacious implies a saturated-and-clinging quality where the hue grips its substrate with stubborn pigmentation. Sits at the bold-and-resilient end of the grid, parallel to unyielding and adamant in usage.
The first synthetic aniline dye — an accidental product of William Perkin's 1856 attempt to synthesize quinine, which yielded a stable purple instead. The color refers to a freshly mauve-dyed silk: a soft, slightly red-shifted pale purple with the slight luster of synthetic-dyed natural fiber.
