Diminished Cordierite
Diminished Cordierite (#757A94) is a true blue with a cool character. It leans cool, sitting on the blue, green, and violet side of the wheel. Quiet and dependable, a fit for product UI and data visualization. Its HSL profile (230°, 13%, 52%) places it in the muted band at a mid lightness. It works across type, buttons, and borders, saturated enough to feel deliberate but balanced enough to not fight the rest of the palette. Etymology
Latin dīminuere, to lessen — past-participle of diminish. As a color modifier, diminished implies a hushed-and-tone-reduced-and-lessened quality where the hue carries the visual register of intentionally-reduced-and-lessened ambient color treatment. Sits at the hushed-and-soft end of the grid, parallel to lessened and dampened in usage.
Silicate mineral marketed as the gemstone iolite — pleochroic deep-blue-violet from one viewing angle and pale-yellow from another. The Vikings reportedly used thin slices as polarizing filters to locate the sun through cloud (sólarsteinn). Cordierite color refers to a cleaved Norwegian cordierite cabochon viewed along the deep-blue axis: a saturated, slightly cool deep blue-violet with the glassy finish of pleochroic gem silicate.
