True Night Teal

Old English trēowe, faithful — used as a color modifier since the seventeenth century for hues that read as the canonical version of their family. True red, true blue: the saturation is full, the hue is neither shifted nor adulterated. Sits at the center of the bold and crisp buckets, marking the unequivocal middle of any chromatic family.

Old English niht, darkness-and-sleep. As a color modifier, night implies a moonlit-or-star-lit-dark quality, the visual register of clear-sky moonlit-and-star-lit atmospheric Rayleigh-scattered low-light surfaces against deep blue-black night-sky horizon. Sits at the modifier-and-time end of the grid, parallel to eve and yore in usage.

Anas crecca, the small dabbling duck whose male in breeding plumage sports a chestnut head crossed by a glossy green-blue stripe. The color refers to that stripe — the iridescent panel just behind the eye: a saturated, slightly muted blue-green with the optical depth of structural color rather than pigment. Cooler than cypress, warmer than cerulean, with the ornithological specificity of a color named for one feather of one bird.
