Waning Russet

#745863
Notes

Waning Russet (#745863) is a true magenta with an earthy character. It leans grounded and natural, the kind of color that plays well with wood, clay, linen, and warm neutrals. Its HSL profile (336°, 14%, 40%) places it in the muted band at a mid lightness. It works across type, buttons, and borders, saturated enough to feel deliberate but balanced enough to not fight the rest of the palette. For a confident two-color system, pair it with its complementary teal. For something softer, pull in its analogous neighbors on either side of the wheel.

Etymology

Waning
adjective

Old English wanian, to lessen — present-participle of wane. As a color modifier, waning implies a hushed-and-fading-and-receding quality where the hue carries the visual register of waning-moon-and-late-summer gradually-diminishing-and-receding color-amplitude. Sits at the hushed-and-fading end of the grid, parallel to fading and dimming in usage.

Russet
noun

From the Old French rousset, reddish-brown. A medieval term for the coarse, undyed wool of peasant cloth — the natural red-brown of the local fleece. The color now refers to autumn foliage, the skin of a russet potato, the rust-stained sandstone of the American southwest. Earthier than rust, drier than mahogany; the red of October.
