Cloudy Cement
Cloudy Cement (#727A80) is a balanced neutral with a mono character. It's a grayscale value, at home in typography, dividers, and the structural layer beneath stronger colors. Its HSL profile (206°, 6%, 47%) places it in the muted band at a mid lightness. It works well as secondary text, borders, and placeholder states. A reliable middle gray that reads cleanly in either light or dark contexts. Pair it with almost any saturated accent. It's built to sit underneath or behind stronger colors without fighting them.
Etymology
An adjectival form of cloud — used as a color modifier since the medieval period for hues that read as overcast or slightly hazed. Cloudy gray, cloudy white: low saturation combined with optical mattness. Sits at the neutral-bucket alongside misty and fog.
Portland cement — a powdered binder of calcium silicate, alumina, and iron, mixed with water and aggregate to make concrete. Patented by Joseph Aspdin of Leeds in 1824 and named for its resemblance to Isle of Portland limestone. The color refers to dry Portland cement powder: a soft, slightly muted pale gray with the powdery finish of micron-ground mineral. Cooler than stone, warmer than dust.
