Infernal Russet
Infernal Russet (#6A1818) is a deep red with a jewel character. It carries the deep, saturated richness of a gemstone. Authoritative and slightly formal, it works well for type and heavy UI elements. Its HSL profile (0°, 63%, 25%) places it in the balanced band at a dark lightness. It works well as a headline, icon, or deep background in an otherwise light layout, pairing cleanly with cream, bone, and warm neutrals. Etymology
Latin infernālis, of the lower realms — derived from infernus (underworld). As a color modifier, infernal implies the deep-glowing-furnace-darkness of Dante-Inferno-and-Bosch-tryptich infernal imagery, with the warm undertone of fire-light against shadow. Sits at the deep-and-warm end of the grid, parallel to hellish and warmer than Hadean.
From the Old French rousset, reddish-brown. A medieval term for the coarse, undyed wool of peasant cloth — the natural red-brown of the local fleece. The color now refers to autumn foliage, the skin of a russet potato, the rust-stained sandstone of the American southwest. Earthier than rust, drier than mahogany; the red of October.
