Eclipsed Knossos
Eclipsed Knossos (#680C85) is a deep violet with a jewel character. It carries the deep, saturated richness of a gemstone. Authoritative and slightly formal, it works well for type and heavy UI elements. Its HSL profile (286°, 83%, 28%) places it in the highly saturated band at a dark lightness. Best used in small doses, like logos, CTAs, focus rings, or highlight text, where its saturation becomes a feature rather than noise. For a confident two-color system, pair it with its complementary green. For something softer, pull in its analogous neighbors on either side of the wheel.
Etymology
Greek ékleipsis, abandonment — past-participle of eclipse. As a color modifier, eclipsed implies the deep occulting darkness of a celestial-body-blocked light-source, where umbral-and-penumbral shadows fall on the hue. Sits at the deep-and-cool end of the grid, parallel to occluded with astronomical connotation.
Minoan Cretan palace-complex (occupied c. 1900–1370 BCE) — the legendary court of King Minos and a major Bronze-Age Tyrian purple production center supplying the Aegean trade network. Knossos color refers to a Knossos-period Minoan purpura-dyed fresco border: a saturated, slightly cool deep violet with the matte finish of multi-bath Hexaplex trunculus shellfish dye on lime-plaster wall painting.
