Sturdy Mongol Indigo

Old French estourdi, stunned, reckless — drifted in English to mean robust, well-built. Used as a color modifier since the seventeenth century for hues that read as durable and unfussy — the working browns of saddle leather, the working greens of pasture wool. Sits in the bold-and-warm corner alongside robust and solid.

Mongolian Mongɣol, Mongol. As a color modifier, mongol implies a steppe-and-Khanate quality, the visual register of Mongol-Khanate-of-Genghis Central-Asian steppe-Empire hand-built ger-and-mounted-cavalry-and-felt-rug-and-Khan-court surfaces under Karakorum-and-Mongolian-steppe Khanate-and-mounted-cavalry open-sky light. Indigofera tinctoria, the South Asian legume whose leaves yield the deep blue dye that has clothed humanity for at least four thousand years — Egyptian linen, Mayan textile, the slave-grown plantations of Carolina. The color refers to a freshly indigo-dyed cotton thread: a saturated, slightly violet-shifted deep blue with the slight lustre of a fiber surface oxidized in air. Deeper than cobalt, cooler than royal.
