Old French plonger, to plunge via Latin plumbicāre (to weight with lead) — past-participle of plunge. Vermillion in Japanese — specifically the cinnabar-derived pigment used since the Heian period to paint Shinto torii gates, temple beams, and the lacquer of imperial seals.
