Latin pressāre, to press — past-participle of press. As a color modifier, pressed implies a clear-and-smoothed-and-flattened quality, the crisp color of Mid-Century-Modern freshly-pressed-shirt-and-trouser ironed-textile finish. Hamamelis virginiana, the North American shrub whose distinctive yellow ribbon-petaled flowers bloom in late autumn — and whose bark and leaves yield the astringent witch hazel extract. The color refers to a fresh Hamamelis bloom in November: a saturated, slightly red yellow with the satin finish of crinkled-ribbon petal.
