Pithed Vermiglione
Pithed Vermiglione (#5E0D35) is a deep magenta with a jewel character. It carries the deep, saturated richness of a gemstone. Authoritative and slightly formal, it works well for type and heavy UI elements. Its HSL profile (330°, 76%, 21%) places it in the highly saturated band at a dark lightness. Best used in small doses, like logos, CTAs, focus rings, or highlight text, where its saturation becomes a feature rather than noise. Old English piþa, pith / inner stalk — past-participle of pith. As a color modifier, pithed implies a deep-and-cored-out quality where the visual surface has been excavated to reveal interior darkness. Sits at the deep-and-architectural end of the grid, parallel to hollowed and cored.
The Italian name for vermillion — used in the cinnabar-pigment chapters of Cennino Cennini's Il Libro dell'Arte and across Sienese and Florentine fresco. The color refers to vermiglione in a fifteenth-century altarpiece: a saturated, slightly orange red with the matte finish of egg-tempera-bound pigment. The Italian equivalent of bermellón.
