Grim Malbec
Grim Malbec (#5D0D08) is a deep red with a jewel character. It carries the deep, saturated richness of a gemstone. Authoritative and slightly formal, it works well for type and heavy UI elements. Its HSL profile (4°, 84%, 20%) places it in the highly saturated band at a dark lightness. Best used in small doses, like logos, CTAs, focus rings, or highlight text, where its saturation becomes a feature rather than noise. For a confident two-color system, pair it with its complementary cyan. For something softer, pull in its analogous neighbors on either side of the wheel.
Etymology
Old English grimm, fierce / fierce-faced — sharing root with German grimm and Old Norse grimmr. As a color modifier, grim implies a deep-and-cool-and-comfortless-formal quality, the dark cool-gray of Norwegian-fjord mid-winter atmospheric-overcast light. Sits at the deep-and-cool end of the grid, parallel to bleak and stern in atmospheric register.
A red-wine grape originally from Cahors in southwest France, now most associated with Argentine Mendoza wine regions. The color refers to a young Argentine Malbec: a deep, slightly cool dark red with the high tannin opacity of high-altitude grape wine. Deeper than Tempranillo, cooler than Rioja.
