Dark Iolite
Dark Iolite (#5D0154) is a deep violet with a jewel character. It carries the deep, saturated richness of a gemstone. Authoritative and slightly formal, it works well for type and heavy UI elements. Its HSL profile (306°, 98%, 18%) places it in the highly saturated band at a dark lightness. Best used in small doses, like logos, CTAs, focus rings, or highlight text, where its saturation becomes a feature rather than noise. For a confident two-color system, pair it with its complementary green. For something softer, pull in its analogous neighbors on either side of the wheel.
Etymology
Old English deorc, dark, gloomy — cognate with the German dunkel and the Latin terra, earth, both pointing to a base meaning of covered or obscured. As a color modifier, dark sits on the lightness axis only: it says nothing about hue or saturation, only that the value is low. Used across every adjective bucket the engine routes to when L < 0.40.
A magnesium-iron silicate gem — cordierite — whose strong dichroism (different colors from different angles) reportedly served Viking navigators as a polarizing filter to locate the sun through cloud. The color refers to a faceted iolite seen along its strong axis: a saturated, slightly violet-shifted deep blue-purple with the gem's signature internal complexity. Cooler than amethyst, warmer than tanzanite.
