Erebine Knossos (#571D90) is a deep indigo with a jewel character. It carries the deep, saturated richness of a gemstone. Greek Erebine, of Erebus — adjectival form of Erebus, the primordial deity of darkness in Hesiod's Theogony. As a color modifier, erebine implies the deepest primordial-darkness of pre-cosmic chaos, with literary-cosmological register. Sits at the deepest-and-coolest end of the grid, parallel to Stygian and Cimmerian.
Minoan Cretan palace-complex (occupied c. 1900–1370 BCE) — the legendary court of King Minos and a major Bronze-Age Tyrian purple production center supplying the Aegean trade network. Knossos color refers to a Knossos-period Minoan purpura-dyed fresco border: a saturated, slightly cool deep violet with the matte finish of multi-bath Hexaplex trunculus shellfish dye on lime-plaster wall painting.
