Wholesome Spark Verdigris

An adjectival form of whole — used as a color modifier since the sixteenth century for hues that read as healthy and unadulterated. Wholesome cream, wholesome wheat: moderate saturation combined with the optical impression of a natural origin. Sits at the crisp-bucket alongside genuine.

Old English spearca, small-ember. As a color modifier, spark implies a small-bright-and-flying-ember quality, the visual register of blacksmith-anvil-and-bonfire-spark hand-small-bright-and-flying-ember blacksmith-anvil-and-bonfire-and-flint-strike sparked-and-small-bright-and-flying surfaces under blacksmith-anvil-and-bonfire-and-flint-strike orange-glow-and-iron-and-flint forge-and-hearth-light. Sits at the modifier-and-mood end of the grid, parallel to flash and flare in usage.

The basic copper carbonate that forms on weathered copper and bronze — the pigment scraped from oxidized metal and used in Renaissance painting before being supplanted by more stable greens. The color refers to a thick verdigris on aged copper roofing or the Statue of Liberty's surface: a soft, slightly muted blue-green with the powdery finish of mineral oxide. Cooler than patina, warmer than seafoam, with the archaeological weight of a mineral made by time.
