Crypted Persimmon (#562C0D) is a deep orange with a jewel character. It carries the deep, saturated richness of a gemstone. Authoritative and slightly formal, it works well for type and heavy UI elements. Its HSL profile (25°, 74%, 19%) places it in the balanced band at a dark lightness. Etymology
Greek kryptē, hidden chamber — past-participle of crypt. As a color modifier, crypted implies the deep-and-funereal-and-architectural quality of medieval European cathedral-and-basilica royal-crypt-chamber underground architecture, particularly the Saint-Denis and Westminster-Abbey royal-funerary tradition. Sits at the deep-and-funereal end of the grid, parallel to sepulchral and tomblike.
Diospyros kaki, the East Asian persimmon — a fruit eaten ripe from the tree in Japan since at least the eighth century, where its color is named kaki-iro. The fall color of the unblemished astringent fruit: a dense, slightly red orange with the velvet finish of a wax-skinned Hachiya. Closer to maple syrup than to citrus, with the patient warmth of a fruit that takes a hard frost to sweeten.
