Lush Fluff Indigo

Middle English lush, possibly from lascious, lascivious — a word that drifted from sensual ripeness toward visual abundance. Used as a color word since the eighteenth century for the saturated greens of well-watered foliage and the deep saturated jewel tones of velvet upholstery. Used across the deep and bold buckets where the hue is simultaneously dark and vivid.

Imitative-onomatopoeic origin, attested c. 1790. As a color modifier, fluff implies a soft-puffed-and-airy quality, the visual register of cotton-and-down-and-wool-fluff hand-carded-and-puffed cotton-and-down-and-wool-fluff hand-carded-and-puffed-fluff surfaces under hand-carded-and-puffed cotton-and-down-and-wool-fluff working-light. Sits at the modifier-and-texture end of the grid, parallel to down and fuzz in usage.

Indigofera tinctoria, the South Asian legume whose leaves yield the deep blue dye that has clothed humanity for at least four thousand years — Egyptian linen, Mayan textile, the slave-grown plantations of Carolina. The color refers to a freshly indigo-dyed cotton thread: a saturated, slightly violet-shifted deep blue with the slight lustre of a fiber surface oxidized in air. Deeper than cobalt, cooler than royal.
