Greek Erebine, of Erebus — adjectival form of Erebus, the primordial deity of darkness in Hesiod's Theogony. Japanese 紫根, gromwell root (Lithospermum erythrorhizon) — the purple-root dye source for traditional Japanese murasaki and the medicinal-herb base for the eponymous shikon ointment used in burn treatment.
