Brooding Rubellite

#53071a
Notes

Brooding Rubellite (#53071A) is a deep red with a jewel character. It carries the deep, saturated richness of a gemstone. Authoritative and slightly formal, it works well for type and heavy UI elements. Its HSL profile (345°, 84%, 18%) places it in the highly saturated band at a dark lightness. Best used in small doses, like logos, CTAs, focus rings, or highlight text, where its saturation becomes a feature rather than noise. For a confident two-color system, pair it with its complementary teal. For something softer, pull in its analogous neighbors on either side of the wheel.

Etymology

Brooding
adjective

The adjectival use of brood in the sense of to dwell on — a gerund-as-modifier that describes mood more than reflectance. Used as a color word principally in art criticism since the late nineteenth century: brooding sky, brooding portrait. In the engine's adjective grid, brooding sits in the dark-and-quiet end where the hue is present but reads as withholding rather than presenting itself.

Rubellite
noun

A red variety of tourmaline — colored by manganese impurities and mined principally in Brazil, Mozambique, and Madagascar. The color refers to a faceted rubellite: a saturated, slightly cool red-pink with the gem's signature internal warmth. Cooler than ruby, brighter than rhodolite.

Moderately saturated colors gain a small bump in P3 — the difference is usually visible side-by-side on wide-gamut hardware but won't change the character of the color.
