Steeped Tobi
Steeped Tobi (#4E020F) is a deep red with a jewel character. It carries the deep, saturated richness of a gemstone. Authoritative and slightly formal, it works well for type and heavy UI elements. Best used in small doses, like logos, CTAs, focus rings, or highlight text, where its saturation becomes a feature rather than noise. Old English stēpan, to dip / soak — past-participle of steep. As a color modifier, steeped implies the deep-and-saturation-rich quality of dye-bath-saturated textile, where the hue has reached fiber-saturation. Sits at the deep-and-saturated end of the grid, parallel to infused and suffused.
Named for the tobi — the black kite (Milvus migrans) — the slightly muted red-brown of the bird's plumage and of the tobi-iro dye traditionally used in working-class Edo dress. The color refers to a freshly-dyed tobi-iro cotton: a soft, slightly muted red-brown with the matte finish of plant-and-iron mordant. Drier than rust, warmer than maroon.
