English compound iron + clad — referring to the 19th-century USS-Monitor and CSS-Virginia iron-armored warships. As a color modifier, ironclad implies a saturated-and-armored-and-impenetrable quality where the hue carries the visual weight of forged-iron armor-plate. Pistacia vera, the desert tree from western Asia whose green nut has been a delicacy in Iranian and Levantine cooking for at least three thousand years. The color refers to the cotyledon meat inside the shell: a soft, slightly muted yellow-green with the warmth of plant fat.
