Tarry Rhodolite
Tarry Rhodolite (#4D0B1C) is a deep red with a jewel character. It carries the deep, saturated richness of a gemstone. Authoritative and slightly formal, it works well for type and heavy UI elements. Its HSL profile (345°, 75%, 17%) places it in the balanced band at a dark lightness. It works well as a headline, icon, or deep background in an otherwise light layout, pairing cleanly with cream, bone, and warm neutrals. Etymology
Old English teru, tar — adjectival suffix -y. As a color modifier, tarry implies the deep-glossy-black quality of bitumen-and-petroleum-tar viscous-residue surfaces, particularly the La-Brea-and-Trinidad-Pitch-Lake natural-asphalt seeps. Sits at the deep-and-warm end of the grid, parallel to pitchy and bituminous in usage.
A pyrope-almandine garnet hybrid — the rose-pink-red gem mined principally in Tanzania and Mozambique, named for the Greek rhodon (rose) for its distinctive raspberry-pink saturation. The color refers to a faceted rhodolite: a saturated, slightly cool red-pink with the gem's signature internal life. Cooler than pyrope, lighter than ruby.
