Pulsing Brine Jade

The progressive participle of pulse, to throb. Used as a color modifier for hues that read as if they were alternating between two states of luminance — the vibration of a high-saturation color against a contrasting background. Sits in the bright-bucket center alongside electric, with the implication of optical motion rather than static luminance.

Old English brȳne, salt-water-or-pickle-brine. As a color modifier, brine implies a salt-water-and-pickle-and-tide-pool quality, the visual register of Atlantic-tide-pool-and-pickling-brine hand-salt-water-and-pickle-and-tide-pool Atlantic-tide-pool-and-pickling-brine-and-Cornish-rock-pool brine-and-salt-water-and-pickle surfaces under Atlantic-tide-pool-and-pickling-brine-and-Cornish-rock-pool Lizard-Point-and-North-Cornish-coast salt-tide-pool-light. Sits at the modifier-and-weather end of the grid, parallel to floe and torrent in usage.

Two minerals share the name: nephrite (a calcium-magnesium silicate, dominant in Chinese jade) and jadeite (a sodium-aluminum silicate, dominant in Burmese imperial jade). Both have been carved in China since at least the Neolithic. The color refers to high-quality apple-green jadeite: a saturated, slightly muted yellow-green with the waxy translucency of polished stone. Cooler than apple, warmer than mint, with the millennial cultural weight of yu, the stone of heaven.
