Old English spearca, spark — present-participle of spark. As a color modifier, sparking implies a saturated-and-electrical-emission quality, the bright color of welding-arc-and-Tesla-coil high-voltage spark-discharge emission. The genus Vanellus — plover relatives — particularly V. vanellus (northern lapwing), whose males display iridescent blue-black plumage on back and crest. The color refers to a male northern lapwing in breeding plumage: a saturated, slightly cool dark blue-green with the iridescent satin finish of structurally colored feathers.
