From the Greek elektron, amber — the substance whose static-electric properties were observed by Thales of Miletus. Used as a color modifier since the late nineteenth century after electric light made certain saturated colors feel attention-demanding. Japanese aotakeblue bamboo — the deep green of mature Phyllostachys bamboo culms before they yellow with age. Aotake-iro names this saturated green in Heian-period color vocabulary. The color refers to a fresh culm of moso bamboo: a saturated, slightly cool deep green with the satin finish of segmented woody grass.
