Latin acidus, sour — sharing root with English acrid and acerbic. A calcium sulfate mineral — the anhydrous form of gypsum — sometimes occurring in saturated deep-blue varieties known as Angelite or Blue Anhydrite. Mined principally in Peru. The color refers to a polished blue anhydrite cabochon: a saturated, slightly cool deep blue with the matte finish of opaque sulfate mineral.
