Sullen Coquelicot
Sullen Coquelicot (#43002C) is a deep magenta with a jewel character. It carries the deep, saturated richness of a gemstone. Old French solain, solitary via Anglo-French solein. As a color modifier, sullen implies a deep-and-cool-and-withholding quality, the dark cool-gray of Norwegian-fjord mid-winter atmospheric-overcast and saturated-saltwater-cliff in late-November light. Sits at the deep-and-cool end of the grid, parallel to gloomy and saturnine in atmospheric tone.
The French word for poppy — Papaver rhoeas — the wild red flower of European cereal fields and the unifying flower of French Impressionist painting (especially Monet's Coquelicots, Argenteuil). The color refers to a freshly opened poppy in a Provençal field: a saturated, slightly cool red with the satin finish of single-day petal. Brighter than scarlet, slightly cooler than tomato.
