An adjectival form of state, condition of dignity. Used as a color modifier since the seventeenth century for the deep saturated jewel tones of formal ceremony — the deep blue of a robes-of-state, the deep red of a state-banquet velvet. Japanese for young greens — the soft yellow-green of early-spring foraged plants used in the nanakusa-no-sekku (seven-herb festival) on January 7. The color refers to a fresh wakana sprig in a winter Kyoto garden: a soft, slightly muted yellow-green with the matte finish of small early-season leaves.
