Old English thunor, thunder — adjectival suffix -ous, sharing root with German Donner and Old Norse Þórr (Thor). As a color modifier, thunderous implies a deep-and-rumbling-and-imposing-cool quality, the dark cool-gray of cumulonimbus-tower-base storm-cloud directly overhead.
