Old English eornost, seriousness, zeal. Used as a color modifier since the nineteenth century for hues that read as committed but unshowy — the working blues of denim, the deep greens of Quaker meetinghouses. Japanese for young greens — the soft yellow-green of early-spring foraged plants used in the nanakusa-no-sekku (seven-herb festival) on January 7. The color refers to a fresh wakana sprig in a winter Kyoto garden: a soft, slightly muted yellow-green with the matte finish of small early-season leaves.
