Anchored Hemp Sapphire

The past participle of anchor, used since the late nineteenth century as a metaphor for secured in place. As a color word, anchored implies a deep saturated tone that grounds a palette — the dark blues, deep greens, and browns that hold a composition together. Sits in the bold-and-deep corner of the grid alongside solid.

Old English henep, hemp-plant. As a color modifier, hemp implies a coarse-bast-fiber quality, the visual register of Russian-and-Italian-and-Far-East-hemp hand-retted-and-spun-hemp-fiber bast-fiber rope-and-canvas-and-cordage hemp-textile surfaces under hand-retted-and-spun-hemp working light. An iron-and-titanium-bearing corundum — the same mineral as ruby, hardness 9 on the Mohs scale, mined for two millennia from Sri Lanka, Burma, Madagascar, and the Cashmere mines of British India. The color refers to a fine Kashmir-cut sapphire: a saturated, slightly violet-shifted deep blue with the gem's signature internal velvet — a quality of light scattering in the stone that faceted glass cannot replicate. Cooler than cobalt, deeper than azure.
