Sunken Cayenne
Sunken Cayenne (#3F1807) is a deep orange with a jewel character. It carries the deep, saturated richness of a gemstone. Authoritative and slightly formal, it works well for type and heavy UI elements. Its HSL profile (18°, 80%, 14%) places it in the highly saturated band at a dark lightness. Best used in small doses, like logos, CTAs, focus rings, or highlight text, where its saturation becomes a feature rather than noise. Etymology
The past participle of sink — used as a color modifier since the eighteenth century for surfaces that read as receded or enclosed. Sunken implies a slightly cool darkness with the optical quality of a recessed plane: the sunken eye sockets of a sculpture, the depressed channels of an Anglo-Saxon enamel. Sits in the deep-and-cool corner, closer to shadowed than to brooding.
Named for the French Guianan capital that exported the peppers, Cayenne is now the generic name for hot dried Capsicum annuum powder. The color refers to fine ground cayenne: a deep, saturated red-orange with the warmth of capsaicin made visible. Brighter than rust, hotter than paprika, with the resinous edge of a spice that registers as both color and burn.
